History and anime

アニメは、日本が存在する国であることを教えてくれたが（私がとてもとても幼かった頃の話だ）、戦国時代の日本の軍事史について学んだことが、私にとって本当に大きかった。

Anime helped teach me that Japan isna country that exists (I'm talking about when I was very, very young), but it was learning about Japanese military history during the Sengoku period that really did it for me.

私の場合は、宗教、音楽、ゲームだった。ここに引っ越してくる頃には、もっと複雑で、後者よりも前者の方がずっと多くなっていた。

Mine was religion,music and gaming. By the time I moved here, it was more complex and because much more about the former than the latter.

This is so relatable.
I just end up telling people my interest is academic, and my consumption of Japanese info and media is very "clinical" in comparison to people who found their interest through anime, music, and manga.

I just really like collectivist cultures, and linguistics.

私はいつも、なぜ日本を選んだのかと聞かれるのと同じ理由で、日本のアニメを見たことがないことを言うようにしている。

I always make sure to mention that I’ve never watched Japanese anime for the same reason they will ask why I chose Japan.
