@OrigamiRice

You don't pay for YouTube or Reddit servers either

We don't get money, but holy shit google maps. I'm not saying it's *right* or a fair trade or what. I'd probably rather pay a modest subscription to use it totally anonymously, but when I stop to think of the *incredible* utilty of something like Google Maps and the amount of time I spend using it, it's kind of incredible that it's (monetarily) free. Imagine showing it to somebody from 35 years ago and them asking "how much do you have to pay to use that?" and the answer being "nothing" (taking for granted that you have to buy the phone, but that's something you would have anyway, it's not like buying a SatNav in the old days.)

I'm shuddering at the thought of a possible future where we would have to watch an ad every time we need directions on Google Maps. Ad pops up if you make a wrong turn and it has to recalculate your route.

If you don't pay for a service then you are the product.
60 - @chawmindur
True, but *laughs in big tech and their subscription services*

So we pay for the service with our data. But seriously duckduckgo has a tracker blocker app. Thousands of attempts blocked a day (they tell you what company, and what info they wanted).
5 - @lt_Matthew
And where does their money come from?
5 - @soupforshoes
Dunno. They swear they don't track data. But I'm kind of assuming they do, and decided I'd rather have one company tracking my data, instead of hundreds. Their statement: "It’s actually a big myth that search engines need to track your personal search history to make money or deliver quality search results. Almost all of the money search engines make (including Google) is based on the keywords you type in, without knowing anything about you, including your search history or the seemingly endless amounts of additional data points they have collected about registered and non-registered users alike. In fact, search advertisers buy search ads by bidding on keywords, not people….This keyword-based advertising is our primary business model."

I am good to sell my info to different companies, they are getting it anyways, might as well earn a buck myself
10 - @l-b_b-l
See this was always my thought. I honestly don’t care if my data is being sold. But why can’t I sell my own data?? I’ll gladly let you know everything short of my SSN (which there is an extremely high chance is already online).
4 - @BushyOreo
You do realize your data isn't even worth a "buck" and is worth less than a penny?
6 - @Vanilla_Neko
Because realistically the average humans data is worth about a third of a cent
5 - @IndependenceNo2060
Giving personal data for 'free' services feels like a raw deal. I want a fair exchange.
2 - @AnaYuma
I'd rather have a "free" internet than having to pay for every single site I've ever used... As a third-world-dweller, my info is worth even less than most of y'all here... Even selling the data of my whole life to every available company wouldn't net me a single month of subscription fees...
2 - @egnards
もしデータが売れなくなったら、今無料で使えてるあんなサービスやこんなサービス、全部有料になっちゃうかもよ?**This isn’t intended to be a comment in support of our data being sold** Often, the things we freely use for free are subsidized by the fact that our data is being sold. In a world without our data being sold, all of those services you find to be useful, but would never pay for? They now cost money.

One thing that people don't seem to realize is that video delivery services in particular are *insanely* difficult to build and maintain, and *extremely* costly. Twitch has been running at a loss for its entire existence, for instance, even with all the ads and such.
38 - @Cool-Newspaper-1
Now live streaming is even more costly, but you’re absolutely right that it’s impossible to imagine how expensive running such a service is.
3 - @CBrinson
It's worth noting google has mitigated this cost by purchasing closed down internet service providers and now owns a chunk of the physical internet assets outright. Bandwidth is cheaper for them than everyone else which is part of how they make this work.
4 - @feor1300
They also have partnerships with most ISPs to host servers on their networks directly so they aren't constantly having to send everything the entire way across the internet. If you ever find a really obscure or really old video that seems to take forever to load the first time you watch it but then comes up fast if you show it to one of your friends, that's because when you first watched it they had to send it to you from whatever central server it's normally hosted on, then the next time you watched it it was cached on a server connected directly to your ISP's network, so anyone else with your internet provider could watch it more efficiently for a period of time until it goes unwatched too long and gets scrubbed to make room for other videos.
4 - @RunningNumbers
People don’t like to pay for things
