1月2日（火）午後5時50分ごろ、東京都大田区の羽田空港C滑走路で、日本航空（JAL）の516便が着陸しようとした際に発火し、炎上しました。このJAL機と海上保安庁の航空機が滑走路で接触したとされています。海上保安庁の航空機は能登半島地震の救援に向かうところでした。

海上保安庁の航空機も炎上し、搭乗していた男性6人のうち5人の死亡が確認されました。残る1人は機長で、負傷したが意識はあるとのことです。

JALの516便の乗員は12人、乳児8人含め乗客は367人で、スライダーを使うなどして計379人全員が脱出しました。うち17人が負傷し、他にもけが人がいないかなどを調べています。

炎上した機体は日本航空の最新鋭旅客機「エアバス350型機」で、北海道の新千歳発・羽田行きの日本航空516便でした。海上保安庁の航空機は6人乗っていたとみられ、機体は「JA772A」で、この機体と「JAL516便」が34R滑走路で衝突したということです。

この火災の影響で、羽田空港のすべての滑走路が閉鎖しています。現在、消火活動が続けられています。
