Didn't deliveries used to be free without Prime though? Prime would get you a faster delivery for free but it was still free for most products? I'm pretty sure I'm not making this up.

プライムが導入された大学時代の私の記憶では、プライムの魅力は配送料が無料であるだけでなく、より早いということだった。プライム以外の配送は有料で、通常の5～7日かかる。当時、プライム会員になるのは当然のことのように思えた。

I don’t think so – the appeal of prime as I remember it from my college days when it was introduced was that shipping was not only free, but also faster. Non-prime shipping was paid and would take the standard 5-7 days. Made signing up for prime feel like a no-brainer at the time. Then shipping options got faster and prime video was added, THEN the prices for prime started going up and product selection on Amazon got worse (ie more generic Chinese stuff), and now we have ads being added to the video service.

Hulu plays so many bad ads! I block Hulu ads by playing them on a laptop with Ublock, then plugging the laptop into the TV with HDMI. Saves so much time.

And the two-day shipping was nerfed several years ago because Amazon's processing speed was slowed down significantly due to labour shortages. Since about 2020 it's basically become four-day shipping in my location (sometimes less depending on what warehouse it ships from).

アマゾンの主要物流拠点から1マイルほど離れた場所から、人里離れた場所に引っ越した。

注文してその日のうちに届いたものが、1週間以上かかるようになった。

アマゾンの商品を見る目が変わった。以前はセールで目に留まったものを衝動買いしていたが、今はずっと控えめで、アマゾンはほとんど利用しない。

長い目で見ればその方がいいのかもしれないが、注文して3時間後には手元に届いていたのが懐かしい。

I moved from a spot that was about a mile from a major Amazon distribution hub to the middle of nowhere. I went from ordering stuff and having it at my door on the same day to it taking a week or more to get to me. It has *truly* changed the way I look at stuff on Amazon. I used to impulse purchase things that caught my eye on sale, but now I'm far more conservative and rarely use Amazon. Probably better in the long run, but man do I miss being able to order bullshit and have it on my doorstep in like 3 hours.

I actually wish it was modular, so those of us who want to pick and choose services could save (or spend) more. I have never touched prime music, and I would gladly sacrifice my access to that to keep ad-free prime video. Sadly, I mainly have prime for free delivery so I won't be cancelling any time soon.

Yup, they've taken cancellations into account, no doubt. How many people even pay for prime specifically for video anyways? I feel like for many (most?) it's a fringe benefit of Prime, a service they'd have anyways.
